Music
Intent
The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all children:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
- be taught to sing, create and compose music
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated
At Prior’s Mill, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We are committed to developing a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.
Implementation
The music curriculum ensures children sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is taught through a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum through Charanga. Teaching and learning should show progression across all key stages within the strands of music.
Peripatetic teachers to come into school and teach individual instruments to those children who wish to learn them. A love of playing an instrument promoted and encouraged in their ability to do so as a form of expression.
Children will access extra-curricular musical participation opportunities such as singing club and ukulele group.
All children will have the opportunity to perform in Christmas productions, end of year productions and/or class worships.
Impact
Music is a powerful focus for creative energy as it stimulates and guides the imagination. It is a vital part of any primary curriculum, underpinning many aspects of learning, such as the ability to listen carefully, to explore feelings and responses to stimuli, to appraise, to take risks, and to work as part of a team.
At Prior’s Mill, children experience a broad, balanced and rewarding music education, and develop their confidence and enthusiasm through experiencing performance, listening, appraisal and evaluation across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
Children are able to enjoy music in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, creator or performer. They can dissect music and comprehend its parts. They can sing and feel a pulse. They have an understanding of how to further develop skills less known to them, should they ever develop an interest in their lives.
