Writing

At Prior’s Mill CE Primary we believe that a quality English curriculum should develop children’s love of reading, writing and discussion. We aim to inspire an appreciation of our rich and varied literary heritage and a habit of reading widely and often for both pleasure and knowledge. We recognise the importance of cultivating a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts and genres. We want to inspire children to be confident in the arts of speaking and listening and who can use discussion to develop their learning.

It is our aim at Prior’s Mill CE Primary to provide children with a rich and varied writing curriculum that supports them to speak, read and write with fluency and with an awareness of their audience. We have a bespoke, progressive writing curriculum that covers all aspects of the National Curriculum and considers all aspects of writing: composition; spelling and phonics; grammar and punctuation; and handwriting. We use a wide variety of quality texts (including a school Literacy Spine) and resources to motivate and inspire our children in their writing.

Our Approach

Our curriculum is organised to ensure that the children become familiar with and skilled at writing both fiction and non-fiction genres. We have a Prior’s Mill sequence of writing which scaffolds the children through planning, writing, editing and evaluating written pieces.
